Objects (2020 - present) is a photographic series that reflects and documents the murder of unarmed black individuals in the United States, either by police brutality or unchecked racism. The items depicted throughout this series portrays the everyday objects that have become iconographic and, in a sense, have played a pivotal role in the victim’s murders. In creating these images, my intention is to portray how baffling it is that these objects were in some part integral to the reasoning to violence. Throughout this body of work, I also confront the ongoing fear I as a black woman live with of losing members of my family, loved ones, and community. My intent is for the audience to question how the worth or importance of these objects and the alleged offenses of thevictims, equate to the worth of a life.

What my Mother Told Me, What my Grandmother Refused to Say is an intimate, parallel conversation regarding the conception of tradition, family history and the methodical analysis of one’s genealogical identity. This series documents my personal role as the kinkeeper within my own family, documenting oral narratives, partaking in biological research, as well as my own family’s history in relation to my personal identity. Through the dual presentation of differing concepts this body of work is intended to be presented in tandem, to define the complications, inconsistences, confusion and truth regarding heritage and personal identity.
